It’s not often that a small hillside village can satisfy the tastes of country lovers, townies and gastronomes all at the same time, yet Benahavís effortlessly fits the bill.
As with most Andalucían towns, Benahavís came into existence under the Moors in the eleventh century and was given the name ‘son of Havis’ as a tribute to prince ‘Havis’ and more recently it was described on a holiday programme ‘as close to paradise as you can get’.
This charming hillside village is located just a short 10 minutes drive from central Marbella accessed via the Rio Guadalmina gorge hill road and although only 7 km inland it is a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Banús, yet easily accessible from both Gibraltar and Málaga airport.
Seemingly untouched by modern times, there is a strong sense of community, visitors to Benahavís are often struck by the pretty ‘chocolate box’ image of winding cobbled streets hiding gems such as the stylish Amanhavis Hotel and tiny white houses before realising that almost every other building is a restaurant of some description. And although there are only 2,000 residents, the numbers are swelled every year thousands of tourists arrive to sample the menus and to soak up the breathtaking scenery.
The town is popular with locals and tourists alike. Famous for the preponderance of restaurants serving an incredible array of cuisines, it’s not surprising that the area is affectionately known as the ‘dining room of Andalucía’. Those who decide to purchase property and live in the village have choice of delightful white washed traditional townhouses and also a selection of new developments situated in and around the surrounding areas.
Modern properties on the periphery of the village have done nothing to detract from the carefree ambiance and every day life, on the contrary it has added to the already colourful vista of markets, shops, galleries, artists and banks.
The area is also a magnet for those looking for premium properties with great access to some of the coasts most desirable towns, villages and amenities plus a plethora of world class golf courses and beaches just a few minutes away. A great way to get a taste of traditional Spanish village life!
