An autonomous region since 1981, Audalucía is located in the southern most corner
of the country hugging the Mediterranean coastline comprising eight provinces (Almeria,
Cádiz, Cordoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga and Seville). It is not only the largest
autonomous region in Spain it’s also the most popular destination for tourists,
expats and investors, looking to purchase property in Spain.
The regions history reads as a long list of conquering forces with each leaving
their own stamp. It is the Arabic invaders that have proved to be the most influential
on AndalucÍan culture, not least of which was to provide the name ‘Al Andalus’.
During the invasions, this part of Spain was one of the most important regions in
the Muslim world and suitable monuments were erected to illustrate the significance,
such as the Mesquita mosque in Cordoba which was once the regional capital
and the beautifully intricate Alhambra palace n Granada. Seville is currently
the official capital of the region.
Today Andalucia’s most famous attributes are the beautiful Mediterranean beaches
of the Costa del Sol, Costa de la Luz and Costa de Almeria, each attracting millions
of visitors, both Spanish and overseas tourists alike. As do the charming ‘pueblos’
such as Benahavís, Ístan, Mijas and Ojen, providing an authentic snap shot of traditional
Spanish life. It is also at the forefront of renewable energy such as wind turbines,
solar energy and bio mass fuels, with ambitious, yet achievable goals for the regions
sustainable energy.
Málaga airport is currently undergoing major renovations in order to cope with the
growing numbers of air travelers coming to the region, where as Málaga itself often
overlooked by tourists and investors is also an attractive beachside city and birth
place of notaries such as artist Pablo Picasso and actor Antonio Banderas who returns
each year to take part in ‘Santa Semana’ the Easter week processions. Spain
is well known for its love of fiestas, there are reputed to be over 3,000 in Andalucía
alone.
Since joining the EU, Spain and in particular AndalucÍa has benefitted enormously
from investment and grants to improve infrastructure such as the toll road ‘autopista
del Mediterrráneo’, making it a world-class centre of excellence with international
standard restaurants, shopping and facilities, whilst at the same time retaining
a sense of history and tradition.
